Quinta da Romaneira is one of the most important and historic wineries in the Douro Valley. Its terraced vineyards extend over more than 85 hectares and overlook the “royal river”, the Douro. These terraces were laboriously carved out of the shale rocks centuries ago and have since formed the basis of a unique terroir and ensure the consistently high quality of Quinta da Romaneira's highly awarded wines.
The "Portuguese country grape" is mainly grown there, Touriga Nacional, but Touriga Franca, Tintoão and Tinta Roriz, as well as a few hectares of white grape varieties, thrive there. The oldest written accounts of the estate date from the 17th and 18th centuries, and since then, successive owners have maintained and expanded the vineyards. In the mid-19th century, da Romaneira was one of the first great quintas to appear on Baron Joseph James Forrester's famous Douro map, and in 1872 Quinta da Romaneira's Single Vintage Ports were among the first Port wines sold at auction at Christie's. Eventually, in the 1940s, the Monteiro de Barros family took over the estate and expanded the property to its current size.
Today, at Quinta da Romaneira , we firmly believe that the magnificent vineyards produce not only choice vintage port, but also fine, powerful, unfortified Douro wines. Today, Douro red wines constitute the estate's second sector of activity. For this too, a new cellar was built in 2005. It was optimally adapted to the prevailing conditions and allows two thirds of the wines to be stored underground and therefore permanently cool.
