If you're interested in exploring Australian Pinot Noir, here's where to start: William Downie Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards in the Gippsland region and crafted by the hands of an undisputed Pinot master. A blend of grapes from Matthews Vineyard (Berry's Creek, South Gippsland) alongside fruit from Downie's own farm in the Baw Baw Shire (West Gippsland), this is true Gippsland terroir in a bottle.
This is a fantastic Pinot, with complex, fruit-driven flavors such as blackcurrant, raspberry, blackberry and allspice. A light minerality and a touch of stoniness come from the volcanic earth, a signature of Downie wines. Elegant structure and complexity abound. Aged for 10 months in French oak and acacia barrels, 10% of which are in new barrels. Enjoy now, or later.
DOMAIN
William Downie created his own label in 2003 after several years living and working in Burgundy. His intention was to produce wines of purity and detail that reflect their place of origin. They are developed in the most natural way possible, without being pushed or directed in any direction. They add nothing and nothing is taken away. Although each of William Downie's wines are made from Pinot Noir, the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland are more different than they are similar. William was voted Young Australian Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveler Wine magazine in 2006."
Today he is so respected in Australian wine circles as a producer of great Pinot Noirs that he is almost synonymous with the variety. Steve Webber of De Bortoli even described him as 'Australia's best winemaker' and a group of sommeliers started a fan club, Team Downie."
