Since his marriage to François Clicquot in 1798, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot led, as befits a woman of her background, the uneventful life of a wife and mother, devoting most of her time to the education of her daughter Clémentine. The sudden death of her husband calls everything into question. Widowed at twenty-eight, Barbe-Nicole nevertheless chose to take over from François and take full charge of the management of the House Nicknamed the “Grande Dame of Champagne”, she was the first woman to manage a champagne house.
